Tutoring priorities change throughout primary school

Lower primary focuses on concepts and learning habits. Upper primary adds time management, reading comprehension and multi-step problem-solving for practical internal-assessment preparation.

Primary school is crucial for developing learning methods. Uncorrected mistakes can accumulate until upper-primary assessments. We therefore fill gaps before tackling advanced work, with attention to correction and consistent revision.

  • 1
Consolidate Chinese, English and maths Follow school topics closely, fill gaps first and then tackle advanced questions.
  • 2
Tests and internal assessments Practise question types, correction and revision routines, rather than merely increasing volume.
  • 3
Extend enquiry STEM classes develop observation, hypothesis-building and communication, extending thinking beyond Chinese, English and maths.

Lower, middle and upper primary: how tutoring priorities change

P1–P2: concepts and habits

When moving from kindergarten to primary school, priorities are adapting to dictation, homework and tests while establishing Chinese, English and maths foundations. From Early years courses students can continue the habits already developed.

P3–P4: consolidation and filling gaps

Topics become deeper, reading passages longer and maths problems more numerous. This stage is a good time to identify and address accumulated gaps before upper primary.

P5–P6: internal assessments and secondary transition

Add time management, reading comprehension and multi-step problem-solving, alongside test formats, correction and revision habits, to prepare practically for internal assessments and then move on to Secondary courses 。

A parent's guide to internal assessments and secondary school allocation

The information below is drawn from the Education Bureau's public information on Secondary School Places Allocation. For current arrangements, refer to Education Bureau website for the latest arrangements.

Which three assessments count towards secondary school allocation?

Participating primary schools submit students' The second term of P5 and both terms of P6 school results. These are standardised, then scaled using sampled average Pre-Secondary One Hong Kong Attainment Test results, with the adjusted results used to determine allocation bands.

The Education Bureau states that Pre-Secondary One Hong Kong Attainment Test results do not directly affect individual allocation. Schools and parents do not need to drill students for it.

The two stages of secondary school allocation

  • 1
Discretionary places Participating secondary schools may reserve up to 30% of S1 places for discretionary admission; participating Direct Subsidy Scheme schools may reserve more. Parents may apply to at most two schools without district restrictions.
  • 2
Central allocation Of the remaining places, approximately 10% are unrestricted by school net, with up to three choices, and approximately 90% follow school nets, with up to 30 choices. Allocation depends on band, school preferences and random numbers.

Because all three sets of results count, upper-primary students need consistent test performance rather than last-minute cramming. Further reading: Parent seminar on internal-assessment strategies 。
